Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM)

16. Conclusion

Artisanal and small-scale mining has much to offer in terms of job creation, as a sustainable livelihood and source of wealth creation for rural communities, and in its significant potential to positively contribute to the economic development of many countries.

Currently, the most pressing need is to support its formalisation in order to bring activities into the legal domain, address the negative social and environmental impacts, build on the positive contributions ASM makes to local communities and development, and increase the capture and collection of revenues for host governments.

In order to realise this development potential, a concerted, collaborative, and wide- ranging policy and programme response is needed. This needs to be adaptive to local contexts and include a range of international agencies, national and local governments, NGOs, academia, private sector organisations, and actively involve the communities and miners themselves.
