Overview


Without specific measures the operations of extractive industries can attract high levels of corruption and reduce foreign direct investment. In this topic overview, corruption is first defined and then described to explain why the extractive industries are particularly susceptible, and how transparency and other measures can prevent or reduce levels of corruption and increase accountability. The methods used by foreign investors to determine levels of risk associated with corruption are then outlined, as well as various measures both national governments and individual departments can implement to help reduce corruption.
