Climate Change and Extractives

Guides

1. Adapting to a changing climate: implication for the mining and metals industry produced by International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM)

This report provides an introduction to the implications that arise from climate change and strategies of the sector to adapt to it.The overall objective is to elaborate on these risks for the physical operations of the mining and metals industry. While there are critical opportunities for the mining and metals industry to develop and design adaptation strategies in ways that work to complement other priorities, such as community relations, the focus of this work is on impacts and adaptation for the mining and metals industry more narrowly.

2. Extractive resource development in a changing climate: Learning the lessons from extreme weather events in Queensland, Australia compiled by National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility

This report presents findings from a research project that investigates the nature and scope of climatic extremes experienced since 2000 in Central Queensland’s coal mining region. It examines the direct and flow-on impacts of extreme events on the mining industry and other stakeholders, and the response mechanisms employed by these stakeholder groups to address key impacts.

3. Assessing Climate Change Risk and Opportunities for Investors

4. Adapting to climate risks and extreme weather: A guide for mining and minerals industry professionals compiled by Leah Mason, Corinne Unger, Aleta Lederwasch, Hala Razian, Laura Wynne and Damien Giurco

Whilst mining and mineral professionals have experience with risk management and managing workplace health and safety, changes to patterns of extreme weather events and future climate impacts are unpredictable. This guide aims to assist mining and mineral industry professionals to incorporate planning and management of extreme weather events and impacts from climate change into pre-development, development and construction, mining and processing operations and post-mining phases of operations.

5. Fossil Fuel Companies and Climate Change (Website) hosted by Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment

On this website the CCSI provides a timeline of the different strategies that fossil fuel companies have embraced to address climate change. Furthermore, it explains what type of information responsible investors can request from fossil fuel companies in order to move towards a decarbonized economy.

6. Water management in mining: a selection of case studies compiled by International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM)

This publication provides a collection of case studies of leading practice on water management by ICMM member companies and other responsible actors in the mining industry. The case studies illustrate a number of innovative approaches to finding sustainable solutions to water issues in this sector. While specific case studies are presented here, many other examples can be found across the sector. These cases are leading the way in helping the mining sector understand and demonstrate responses to changing needs in this area.
